Between the sudden influx of LIVE musicals on TV (Grease! Hairspray!) and the increased popularity of musicals in the movies (Moana! La La Land!), 2017 was a year where we heard our favorite celebs burst into song at every turn. We wanted to incorporate these great moments (and great musicians!) into the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards with a new category voted upon via social media.
Best Musical Moment celebrated the use of song in movies and television. Voting for took place exclusively on the next-generation entertainment social network musical.ly. To vote, fans created custom musical.ly videos using songs from their favorite nominated moments. Each video submission served as a vote in the category, and members of the musical.ly community could also use “likes” to bolster their favorite nominees position.
The Best Musical Moment winner was revealed during the main show and handed the iconic Golden Popcorn during a custom segment. Sponsored by Truth.
